About Hoge Veluwe National Park

Hoge Veluwe National Park, located in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands, spans approximately 5,400 hectares of varied landscapes including forests, heathlands, and sand drifts. Established in 1935 by the Kröller-Müller couple, the park was created as a private nature reserve focused on habitat preservation and public enjoyment. It is renowned for its extensive cycling network enabled by the famous white park bicycles available for free use by visitors, making it one of the most bike-friendly natural areas in Europe. The park’s geography features a mosaic of open heath, dense Scots pine and oak forests, and dune-like gravel deposits sculpted by glacial and wind action. Wildlife thrives here, including red deer, wild boar, roe deer, and a variety of birds such as black woodpeckers, buzzards, and owls. Hoge Veluwe also hosts the Kröller-Müller Museum, which features an impressive collection of modern art including pieces by Vincent van Gogh, seamlessly combining nature and culture. Visitors are attracted by the park’s extensive trail systems suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Several lookout points provide panoramic views of the heath and forested areas, especially during the vibrant flowering season of late summer. The park’s visitor centers offer educational programs, maps, and exhibits on regional flora and fauna. Hoge Veluwe’s blend of natural beauty, art, and outdoor recreation makes it a beloved destination for nature lovers, families, and cultural tourists alike.
